That day, we woke with the thrill of rupture. We were two perfect flashes—one radiating from me, the other from him. Once, we had mirrored each other, as if neither could exist without the other. But later, our collapse spelled catastrophe: the end of the world.

His flash left the room, leaving him sprawled on the bed, crushed by the force of desire. The most beautiful version of sex—luminous, scattered across rough sheets unfit to contain the heat within. And without. It was a basement room at the back of a farm that wasn't ours, filled with petrified animals and shelves choked with knickknacks: a perfect row of mystical horses—farm horses, toy horses, war horses, apocalypse horses. Leaving, we crossed the threshold to the pool.

The air pressed down on our faces—ancient, sticky, greenish, smelling of things long gone. Thick, orphaned air that defied gravity, floating despite its fall.

From the gate bearing a sign reading "Beware of fierce dogs," an immense animal came running—a gentle beast the size of a horse. It flew toward us like a miracle, cutting the last oxygen, slipping between us as if to warn that the end was near. Moments later, another flash fell from the sky, piercing the air and leaving a perfect wound—a crack through which a light breeze escaped, reminding me of the past.

His trail broke the atmosphere, crossing the sky over us and the dogs, as we breathed, once more, a breath of freedom. He bravely held back the dog, blinded and petrified by the falling light. When it finally struck the earth, everything turned white and luminous, erasing the edges of our bodies and all existence.

Instantly, N woke alone in his bed, far from that fictional farm born of nightmare architecture. Crushed under a mountain of blankets, he moved to the sofa by the window where his dog waited, as he radiated his inner fire onto her. He looked outside, saw the world moving on, felt the lighter air enter his body easily. With a long, held sigh—and with the thrill that rupture brings—he realized it had all been a bad dream.

The walker is the first and last surveyor, I mean human. An interpreter and a magician, one who can read the curves of the world.

E and I had walked for hours through the streets of the End of the World. It was the first days of tourism in Tierra del Fuego. Ten months had passed since the pandemic lockdown. We boarded a completely empty plane. There was a promise that the world was beginning again. That our faces were still the same, that the air smelled the same. That the world had not ended as we thought it would.

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean —
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down —
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

We always imagined Tierra del Fuego, named after the flames, burning mountains. We never imagined that down there in the south of the planet, the world didn't end, the world continued on its course. The sky above and the earth below.
